Richard is a counsellor and coach for couples and adult individuals. He constantly creates new models and tools for clients. Since 2003, his passion has been helping couples figure out how to do better relationships. His innovative approach emerged from early work, and still continues to evolve. He’s now integrating his MEPS and BLENDER models with the Enneagram, writing up what he’s learned during 20 years of couple counselling, and preparing to publish and teach.
Besides couples, Richard works primarily with six themes: (1) loss; (2) stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and emotions; (3) addiction and substance abuse; (4) personal growth and life crisis; (5) work-related issues; and (6) men. His therapeutic approach is person-centred, solution-focused, emotion-focused, and systemic. He uses narrative and cognitive therapy, NLP, the Enneagram, accelerated learning, multiple intelligence, and (not least) humour.
He's had two working lives. The second life has been 30 years as counsellor, coach, and trainer. The first life was a decade with professional CPA firms (insolvency, investigations, litigation) and a decade with business operations and finance. The breadth and depth of his experience, and projects in a dozen countries worldwide, provide a rich source of practical, cross-cultural, hands-on examples. He relates easily and supportively to a wide variety of people and situations.
Born in the UK in 1950, Richard moved to Asia in 1986. He has since lived in Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, and been with his Singaporean Chinese girlfriend since 1987. He’s been a Dale Carnegie instructor and a PhotoReading instructor, and trained with Corporate Coach U. He’s written professional and business journal articles, presented at conferences, been featured in media, and been a founder member of two men’s groups.
Richard also has spiritual and physical lives. He lived in an ashram for seven years in his twenties, and has practised self-awareness meditation for 50 years. A keen orienteer and hiker, he’s written a book (“Rambles in Hong Kong”), founded an annual “Hike the hills” fund-raiser for Hong Kong’s Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care, and leads Loopy Hikes. He’s been a museum docent guide in Singapore, and a Heritage Tour guide in Hong Kong.
